Since 1999, the amount of suicides in the United States has grown by 27%. Treating suicidal depression has always been challenging, as the most common treatment methodologies—namely, antidepressants and psychotherapy—can take weeks, and sometimes even months, to take effect. It goes without saying that, if an individual is having suicidal thoughts, he or she needs immediate relief to prevent self-harm or worse.

There may be hope, however, as a study recently published in the American Journal of Psychiatry shows that ketamine can reduce suicidal ideation in a matter of hours! Using such metrics as the Scale for Suicidal Ideation and the Beck Depression Scale, researchers at the University of Columbia Medical Center noticed a marked change in symptoms of depression, fatigue and suicidal thoughts—all within 24 hours of administering ketamine. The results of the ketamine infusion lasted upwards of six months, with minor side effects that lasted only hours post-infusion.

This study has the potential to unlock the door and allow pharmacologists to design faster acting, more effective antidepressants, ultimately enabling those living in darkness to enjoy more rich and fulfilling lives.

The body of information that favors the use of ketamine as an antidepressant continues to grow. The amount of research performed in the last year, alone, is remarkable, and all of it reinforces ketamine’s position as a “wonder drug”—the most effective antidepressant of the century.
